Costs: his first-session tax credit bill
What they say
In the October 7 debate he said that in his first legislative session he introduced an expansion of the earned income tax credit, and that it cut child poverty in Colorado by 40%.
What the record shows ·
He was not yet in the House for the 2023 regular session; he is not on its May 7, 2023 roll call. His first session was the November 2023 special session, where he is listed as a sponsor of HB23B-1002. It raised the state credit from 25% to 50% of the federal credit for tax year 2023. He voted yes, and it was signed November 20, 2023. In 2024, his first regular session, he and Weissman were the House prime sponsors of HB24-1134, which set the credit at 50% for 2024.
Limit: He did not name the bill. Colorado lists him as a sponsor, not a prime sponsor, of the 2023 bill, and its increase was for one tax year. The 40% child-poverty figure is not tested; a bill cannot measure it.
