The roll call
The House Clerk writes down the question, the date, and the names. The Senate prints recorded votes in the Congressional Record. A state legislature uses its journal. Find the question, then the name.
A no on an amendment and a no on final passage are nos to different things. A voice vote may leave no names at all. That absence is not a silent yes.
The bill
Congress.gov has the number, the sponsor, and whether it moved. A name on a bill is a proposal. Sponsoring or cosponsoring it does not mean it passed or became law.
The law
A public law is a bill that got through and was enacted. A yes vote on a bill that died is a real vote, but it is not a statute on the books. When someone says they passed a law, find the bill number, their role, and the final status.
What this will not do
One roll call is one act on one question. It is not a whole career, and it does not show why they voted. For the national rules on who can vote, read who could vote, in eight dates. For a person, open the Iowa U.S. Senate desk.
