Voter guide

Background, stated goals, record, and money

Goals come from the campaign's own platform. Record lines are official actions.

How this guide is built

Background comes from official records, and from the campaign's own biography where the bullet says so; goals are summarized from the campaign's own platform and stay attributed; the record lines are official actions with the government source attached; money is shown as filed, with the filings it covers in the note under the table, and is not evidence of why any position was taken.

William Lawrence

Background

  • Raised in East Lansing and a graduate of East Lansing High School; he and his wife live in Lansing.
  • Describes himself as an organizer and a founder of the Sunrise Movement, where he began his career working on climate change and green jobs.
  • Says he has spent the last four years on housing in Michigan, and founded the Michigan Rent Is Too Damn High Coalition and the Mid-Michigan Tenant Resource Center.

What they say they want to do

  • Medicare for All, to take the profit motive out of health insurance.
  • Major federal investment in housing and a federal tenant bill of rights.
  • A minimum tax on billionaires' wealth, and lifting the cap on the Social Security payroll tax.
  • A 12-month federal moratorium on new data centers.
  • An end to arms sales to Israel and other human rights violators, and a ban on stock trading by members of Congress and the executive branch.

What the official record shows

He has not held public office, so there are no votes or official acts to list. Searched: the state's candidate listing, his campaign site and Michigan Legislature records.

Words and record

What they say, and what the record shows

Each card gets one label from a fixed list and states its own limit.

William Lawrence

Housing: the renters' coalition he founded

No assessment

What they say

He says he is a founder of the Michigan Rent Is Too Damn High Coalition, and that it has won statewide protections for low-income renters.

What the record shows · Jan 16, 2025

Michigan banned housing bias based on a tenant's source of income in laws signed in 2024 and 2025. Their committee records do not name the coalition, which does not rule out other work.

What they say

He says he is a founder of the Michigan Rent Is Too Damn High Coalition, and that it has won statewide protections for low-income renters.

“I am a founder of the Michigan Rent Is Too Damn High Coalition, which fights for solutions to the housing crisis, and has won statewide protections for low-income renters.”

What the record shows · Jan 16, 2025

Michigan did pass statewide renter protections in that time. Senate Bills 205, 206 and 207 and House Bills 4062 and 4063 of 2023 ban housing discrimination based on a tenant's source of income. They became Public Acts 178, 179, 180, 199 and 200 of 2024, signed between December 30, 2024 and January 16, 2025. The House committee's analysis of these bills lists 40 groups that testified for or backed them; the coalition is not among them. The one House analysis found that names it is for a different bill, HB 5238 of 2023 on eviction records: "Rent is Too Damn High" testified for it on December 5, 2024. That bill passed the House and died in a Senate committee. The Senate committee's minutes for its May 16, 2023 hearing on Senate Bills 205-207 and its June 13 vote list who testified or turned in cards; neither names Lawrence or the coalition.

Why there is no assessment here

The laws exist, but the coalition's part in them is not established. Neither the House nor the Senate committee record lists it, which does not rule out work done another way.

Limit: His sentence names no law. The card uses the source-of-income laws because news reports tie the coalition to them, which is a lead, not a record. Who founded the coalition was not checked.

William Lawrence

Jobs: the 26 billion dollars he says he won

No assessment

What they say

His campaign says he has won 26 billion dollars in federal investment to create Michigan jobs.

What the record shows · Aug 16, 2024

His unnamed program's $26 billion matches a statewide IRA investment count. He has held no public office; the records do not establish what share his advocacy won.

Quotes, full record and limits

What they say

His campaign says he has won 26 billion dollars in federal investment to create Michigan jobs.

“He’s won $26 billion in federal investment to create quality, Michigan jobs.”

What the record shows · Aug 16, 2024

His campaign site names no program. The figure matches a statewide one: on August 16, 2024, Michigan's environment department said the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 had brought more than 26 billion dollars in new investments to the state. His About page credits the Sunrise Movement, which calls him an original cofounder, with helping pass "the largest green jobs program in U.S. history". He has not held public office.

Why there is no assessment here

The state's 26 billion dollars is new investment across Michigan tied to that law, not a grant to him or to Sunrise. No record shows what share of it his work won.

Limit: His campaign site does not say which program it means. Advocacy groups can push for money they do not award or receive.

William Lawrence

Money: corporate PAC money

Matches stated record claim

What they say

His campaign says he is unbought by corporate money.

What the record shows · Jul 15, 2026

His filings through July 15, 2026 show $39,843.74 from 16 political committees, and the FEC types none of them as a corporation's PAC.

What they say

His campaign says he is unbought by corporate money.

“He is independent of DC insiders and unbought by corporate money.”

What the record shows · Jul 15, 2026

His campaign's filings through July 15, 2026 show 39,843.74 dollars from 16 political committees. The FEC types none of them as a corporation's PAC. Most came from hybrid PACs (18,462.66 dollars), leadership PACs (9,000) and a qualified PAC (5,000). One union's PAC gave 3,000 dollars and one House campaign 2,000. Two givers, 1,500 dollars together, have no FEC committee type.

Limit: This covers committee money in his reports through July 15. Gifts from individuals are not sorted by employer here. Some PACs that gave, such as leadership PACs, may take corporate money themselves.
