Ethics: the congressional stock trading ban
What they say
His House office says he helped introduce the Stop Insider Trading Act in January and helped pass it in July. The bill would bar members of Congress and their families from buying individual stocks, and would require photo ID to vote in federal elections.
“Barrett helped introduce the Stop Insider Trading Act in January”
What the record shows ·
Congress.gov lists him as an original cosponsor of H.R. 7008, introduced January 12, 2026 by Rep. Bryan Steil. He voted Yea when the House passed it on July 22, 232 to 198 (Roll Call 280). In the Senate, a motion to end debate on taking it up failed on September 30, 53 to 47.
Limit: He is a cosponsor, not the sponsor; "helped introduce" fits an original cosponsor. The bill also carries voter ID rules, so his vote was on both. It is not law.
