Social Security and Medicare

In short

Evans's House office says Social Security must be protected and backs making it tax-free. Rutinel's campaign would block any cut to Social Security or Medicare or a higher retirement age, and make the wealthy pay more in. Wood's campaign wants Medicare to stop spending tax money on high earners. Evans voted for the 2025 law adding a $6,000 deduction for people 65 and older through 2028; it leaves Social Security benefits taxed as before.

    Full detail

His office says he supports efforts to make Social Security tax-free. He voted for H.R. 1, now Public Law 119-21. Section 70103 adds a 6,000 dollar deduction for each taxpayer 65 or older, for tax years before 2029, phased down above 75,000 dollars of income (150,000 joint). It does not change how Social Security benefits are taxed. None of the 262 measures he had cosponsored by October 1, 2026 would, by its title, end the tax on benefits. Limit: The deduction lowers tax for many older people, including on benefits, but it is tied to age, not to Social Security, and ends after 2028. It is a step the way he says, not a tax-free benefit.
