Health care

In short

Balkcom's campaign says she will fight for better health care and names no specific policy. Ager's campaign backs a public option and Medicare dental and vision coverage; Groo's would end rules requiring state approval before some health facilities open. On the record, Balkcom voted no on all four House votes on the 2023 state Medicaid expansion law. She voted for the 2023 budget that expansion depended on.

    Full detail

At a Chamber of Commerce forum in her 2022 Republican primary for the state House, she said she did not favor expanding Medicaid and that her concern was where the budget would find the money. She voted no on all four House roll calls on House Bill 76, which expanded Medicaid and changed some certificate-of-need rules: 96 to 23 and 92 to 22 in February 2023, then 95 to 21 and 87 to 24 on agreeing to the Senate's version in March. It passed, and the governor signed it on March 27, 2023 (Session Law 2023-7). Limit: Her words are from 2022, before she took office; her 2026 campaign says only that she will fight for better health care. Expansion could start only after a 2023 budget became law, and she voted for that budget.
