The SALT increase and the local tax-savings claims
What they say
Lawler said the 2025 law delivered the largest tax cut in American history, put more than $4,000 back in Hudson Valley families’ pockets and fulfilled his promise to raise the SALT cap from $10,000 to $40,000. He also said over 90% of Hudson Valley taxpayers could fully deduct their state and local taxes.
What the record shows
Lawler voted Yea on the May 22, 2025 House bill and Aye on final House concurrence July 3. Public Law 119-21 sets the SALT itemized-deduction cap at $40,000 for 2025 and $40,400 for 2026, with 1% annual increases through 2029 and a return to $10,000 in 2030. Married-separate limits are half. The cap is reduced by 30% of modified adjusted gross income above $500,000 in 2025 or $505,000 in 2026, subject to the statutory floor. His January 2025 op-ed had advocated $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 jointly. JCT’s July 1 score of Senate-passed tax provisions estimated about $4.475 trillion less revenue over 2025-2034 relative to present law. His campaign calculator gives $3,293 for a typical family of four and repeats a 90% residents estimate.
Why there is no assessment here
The enacted cap change is documented, but the precise earlier $40,000 promise, largest-ever historical comparison, more-than-$4,000 local household amount and over-90% full-deduction share remain unverified. Each requires a defined population, dates and baseline. The January proposal was larger; its enactment is not claimed here. Itemization, income phaseout and actual taxes paid determine eligibility. Lower examples with different assumptions do not automatically disprove the debate amount, and the revenue score is not a cash payment to each family.
