What they say

In the October 7 KOIN 6 debate, Gluesenkamp Perez said that when it was unclear whether the Coast Guard would require a movable span, which she said would add at least $1 billion, she fought hard and made sure the bridge got a fixed span.

What the record shows · Jan 16, 2026

On January 15, 2026 she wrote to Rear Adm. Arex Avanni, the Coast Guard's Northwest commander, backing the bridge program's request for a fixed span with 116 feet of clearance. On January 16 the Coast Guard told the program it would allow the fixed span. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson says he also met Coast Guard leaders to make the case.

Limit: Her letter backed the outcome a day before it came; the decision was the Coast Guard's, on the states' request. The $1 billion cost gap she cites was not checked.
